The US Trail Running Conference is the gathering place for the people who make trail running possible. Its mission is to strengthen the trail running ecosystem in a focused, community-driven conference for educating, collaborating, and growing the sport responsibly.
Ultrarunning standout Sally McRae and longtime Western States 100 race director Craig Thornley have been tapped as keynote speakers for this year’s U.S. Trail Running Conference, set for November 5-7 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The pairing brings together two of the sport’s most recognizable voices—McRae known for her outspoken advocacy and storytelling within the ultra community, Thornley for 14 years shaping one of trail running’s most storied races—giving this year’s gathering of race directors, industry stakeholders and brands a marquee draw to headline the three-day event.
Thornley has been the steward of Western States 100—the sport’s oldest and most storied 100-miler—for over a decade, and has logged more than 100 ultras of his own, including 18 finishes at 100 miles. McRae has built one of the most recognizable careers in the sport, from a Moab 240 win and the Triple Crown of 200s to two top-10 finishes at Western States, all while becoming one of ultrarunning’s most sought-after voices on resilience and mental toughness through her book, “Choose Strong,” her podcast, and her coaching.
At the USTRC, Sally and Craig will sit down together for a keynote conversation on Leadership with Purpose—what it actually looks like to lead when things get hard, whether that’s 70 miles into a 100-mile race, at the helm of the sport’s most iconic event, or in the middle of a season that just isn’t going your way. This is a rare chance to hear two people who’ve spent decades in this sport, from very different vantage points, talk candidly about grit, decision-making, and what it means to lead with heart.
The US Trail Running Conference is the premier gathering for the trail and ultrarunning community, a place where race directors, brands, athletes, media, and outdoor industry leaders come together to connect, learn, and shape the future of the sport.
Founded by Terry Chiplin and long recognized as a hub for education and collaboration within trail running, the conference enters an exciting new chapter under UltraSignup’s stewardship. The goal is to honor the incredible foundation Chiplin built while expanding the event’s reach, elevating the experience, and helping grow the trail running ecosystem for years to come.
