David Miller’s Favorite Winter Themed Trail-Running Photos

The cold, dark winter season has a beauty all its own. UK-based photographer David Miller shares a stunning collection of his favorite chilly and damp images. Each image is followed by a note from David.

In the mist and difficulty of ascending up onto Gorbeiako Gurutzea in the Gorbea National Park, Spain. No views during the Gorbeia Suzien Skyrunning race but what an opportunity to photograph an event where the inhabitants of Zeanuri come together and celebrate the sport we all love so masterfully! Notice the two runners emerging from the background.

‘Every path has its puddle’. This photo was taken during Ultra Trail Snowdonia (by UTMB). After a heavy downfall, a runner ascends the popular Pyg Track leading to the summit of Snowdon.

The muted colors of winter are my favorite to photograph. This photo shows the different shades of the Exmoor National Park with a silhouette of a runner skipping across the top of the Little Hangman cliff top.

Creating some balance in life is important. The same goes for trail running, especially in the winter when you have to navigate some potentially treacherous conditions! Here we have runner (and friend) Andy Sloan creating his own balance running around the Isle of Portland.

It’s a rare sight to have snow in Dorset so runner Chris Randall makes the most of this special occasion by racing the last of the light across the South Dorset Ridgeway National Trail. I secretly like the cable in this photo…

Anna Wiles taking on the immaculately titled Hurtwood 50k in the Surrey Hills. Focusing on the branches was non intentional but it’s what makes this photograph work. Sometimes the unexpected turn out the best.

Taken during the now iconic Arc Of Attrition 100-mile winter-ultra in Cornwall, UK. A unique section of the course sees participants climb the steep ascent out of the beautiful Kynance Cove on the South West Coast Path, the UK’s longest National trail.

There’s something subtle about this photograph and I’d choose it over and over again in comparison to a big, beautiful backdrop which as photographers we naturally gravitate towards. UTS-50 Race leader Jack Scott was running up the mountain towards me and as he passed, we both turned around at the same time enabling me to capture this moment.
